Overview

All workshops will be taught in Novie Trump’s spacious, sunlit studio in Jerome, Arizona. Housed in the former auto body shop of the old high school, her newly renovated and fully equipped studio boasts 15 foot ceilings and a wall of windows overlooking the nearby desert mountains. 


One-on-One Professional Immersion Workshop with Novie Trump

Cost: $1200
Location: Flux Studios, Jerome, AZ

Students will have the unique opportunity to create their own workshop, working side by side with Novie in her beautiful sunlit studio in the Arizona high desert mountains. This is a completely immersive experience, allowing the student to custom tailor exactly what they would like to learn while receiving one-on-one attention and instruction from Novie. Throughout the session, there will be opportunities for participants to learn about professional development of their art practice and receive feedback on their individual portfolios. Assistance will be given in writing or fine-tuning art resumes and artists statements. A partial list of skills and subjects from which a student may choose:

• Professional Development for Artists: understanding image requirements for print, digital and online submissions, applying to juried exhibitions, developing professional relationships with curators, exploring national and local exhibition opportunities, and marketing artwork effectively with printed materials and on the web. 
• Basic to advanced hand-building with clay slab construction
• Personal Imagery Development
• Low-range to mid-range glazing techniques in oxidation firings
• Test tile experimentation
• Texture stamp and slab construction
• Mark-making and carving techniques
• Image transfer on various substrates: wood, clay, glass
• Fired laser decals on glass and clay
• Incorporation of metal objects and wire in fired clay
• No-fail hanging mechanisms and methods
• Appropriate glues and adhesives
• Etching text and imagery onto glass, ceramic and metal

Lodging:
Students enrolled in the Immersion Workshop will stay in the guest house of Novie Trump, located on the grounds of her two-acre property in Clarkdale, AZ.  Bask in the peaceful desert sunshine while overlooking the lush Verde River and ancient Indian ruins nestled in hundreds of acres of pristine national parklands. The guest house is a private Santa Fe Modern 700 square foot studio featuring a living room area, California King bed, a custom indoor Japanese soaking tub and a fully equipped kitchen. The studio and guest house are conveniently located near the popular tourist destinations of Sedona, Old Town Cottonwood and Jerome. There are many wonderful restaurants and shops in the area. Glorious hiking trails and swimming holes await exploration. Participants may book additional experiences such as in-house massages, private wine tastings, local spa treatments, a guided hiking tour to see hidden petroglyphs in the desert, and kayaking the local rivers.

The Art of the Reliquary

Date: October 21 & 22, 2017
Time: 10 AM- 4 PM
Cost: $295
Location: Flux Studios, Jerome, AZ

In this hands-on workshop students will use personal imagery to create precious objects from porcelain and a reliquary or shrine to house them. Niches, doorways and windows will be used to alternately hide and reveal inner treasures. The incorporation of engraved glass panels, metal and found objects will also be explored in this energetic two-day workshop. Basic hand-building techniques will be utilized in conjunction with mark-making and carving to develop surface and narrative. Various methods of texturing will be used to achieve surfaces derived from nature, such as tree bark, rocks and honeycomb. Methods of layering of glazes, slips, stains and oxides to achieve weathered antique surfaces in cone six oxidation firing will be shared, along with glaze recipes. 

Note: To allow for drying and firing time, all works completed in class will be bisque fired and available for shipping or pick up from the studio 3-6 weeks after the class, to be finished at home.

The Art of the Miniature Reliquary with Novie Trump 

Date: November 4 & 5, 2017
Time: 10 AM- 4 PM

In this fun holiday workshop students will incorporate found objects, text, plaster, paint, wax, glass, wire, and thread as they make a series of miniature  reliquaries/shrines/altars using carvable foam, plaster and paint. Each day will begin with exciting, informative demonstrations followed by time to create. A wide variety of techniques will be shared, including: mixed media collage, image transfer techniques, foam and plaster construction, glass etching and engraving. Students will leave with finished reliquaries. 

Perfect for creating unique holiday gifts for the special ones in your life.

Tilemaking 101

Date: January 13 & 14, 2018
Time: 10 AM- 4 PM
Cost: $295
Location: Flux Studios, Jerome, AZ

In this two-day workshop students will create a variety of beautiful art tiles utilizing techniques such as bas relief, sgraffito, slip trailing, carving linoleum block stamps to add texture and design, sprigging, layering of slips, and surface treatments that mimic textures in nature. This is a fantastic opportunity to learn techniques which can later be applied to larger projects. 

Note: To allow for drying and firing time, all works completed in class will be available for shipping or pick up from the studio 3-6 weeks after the class. Unless slips and underglazes are used as surface decoration, all tiles will be bisque fired to be finished at home.
